Becoming a better gardener one step at a time

You can be a better gardener one step at a time and this is where you start.

I’m Doug Green and while I’m a 30-year veteran of the nursery industry, an award-winning garden author and experienced gardener – I started out much like you are – needing to know a heck of a lot to get a great looking garden.

Finding the things I needed to know wasn’t easy and finding the right people to share that information wasn’t always an easy task either. I had to learn a lot of things the old-fashioned try-it-and-kill-it way.  And I did, learning to grow in practical ways that didn’t take a lot of time and effort but still generated great gardens.

Along the way, I did find mentors who gave me great tips and hints on solving specific problems to get plants to do what I wanted them to do.  I learned how to keep plants alive even when the experts said it couldn’t be done (just because I didn’t know any better and I tried all kinds of crazy things)

I wound up starting a nursery that grew into the region’s largest specialist plant place (over 1600 varieties of perennials and 600-800 varieties of annuals every year).  Along with these plants, I’d start another 300-400 new trial plants every year to see if they’d grow in my USDA 4 garden. (most wouldn’t but every year I got pleasant surprises)

And I Shared What I Learned

I started writing newspaper columns to help local gardeners, then magazine articles and finally books.  Now, I’m up to 8 books (including a major award winner) and a bunch of e-books on specific topics.  Along the way I had my own radio program and multiple guest appearances on local and national television programs.   I now write exclusively for my own websites and deliver enough information each month to keep over a million visitors informed.

One of the problems

One of the problems with the Internet (quite frankly) is there are millions of website visitors and one of me.  And while I enjoy answering gardening questions, I simply can’t answer individual questions for everybody.

Any solution – whether it be newsletters, website forms or forums was quickly filled up and I couldn’t handle the volume and help everybody.  I tried them all.

This Solution

I’ve just set up a system here where folks can take courses, learn what they need to learn and ask questions about the courses.  I can restrict the number of people in the course to what I can handle and meet their needs.

I regulate the number of members by shutting down new registrations every now and then until I’m sure there are no new, pressing questions and then I’ll open it up again to a restricted number of folks.

And if too many people want in, I raise the prices.  I’ve raised prices several times to slow the flood of new registrations but the price you start with will never be raised as long as you’re a member.  To be fair, if you stop your membership, and want to rejoin, you’ll have to start at the existing price whether it’s the same or raised.

You Get Your Questions Answered

In this way, I guarantee to answer your course-questions when you’re a member.

The Information is Updated Regularly

I read several dozen newsletters every month and add content to this website regularly.  It’s been constantly growing and being added to every month so now there are well over 1000 articles and notes here.
