He owned and ran his own greenhouse/nursery business in Athens, Ontario named Simple Gifts Farm (hence the old website name of simplegiftsfarm.com) for 23 years. This was 20,000 square feet of retail greenhouses plus associated nursery growing space. Growing 1800 varieties of perennial flowers and 600 varieties of unusual annuals and vegetables, Doug enjoyed his time growing.
He shut down the nursery in 1998 to write full time. He has 8 paper gardening books published including:
Doug does a variety of articles, podcasts and videos for his 9 websites and writes e-books for his growing electronic publishing company.
Doug spends the spring through fall on an island off the city of Kingston, Ontario, Canada out in Lake Ontario and is developing a new garden there. When not in the garden, he can found driving his 77 Spitfire on the way to sail his mahogany Folkboat in the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. When frost takes out the garden and the leaves hit the ground, he and his heirloom seed-expert partner head South to their winter quarters where he continues to write and explore another side of gardening.
